Kate Bush

I wrote a piece about Kate Bush for the NME:

As soon as she hit number one with her debut single ‘Wuthering Heights’ in 1978 Bush told her label EMI to go shove it. Not literally - she is still signed to them today - but has effectively said no to her label’s every suggestion as to how her career should progress ever since. They wanted a compliant pop pin-up in a revealing bodysuit. She wanted to be depicted being chased by dogs through the trees via the medium of dance. She won. Mark was two years younger and daft as a brush; one day he could win a poetry competition, the next he would be suspended for stabbing someone with a compass. Everything that left his mouth was a fabrication, created to make him more likeable – and it generally worked. I probably traded him a ‘teenth of exceedingly ineffective hash for the T-shirt. Or maybe a Dinosaur Jr twelve inch. Or a butterfly knife. Or a condom...
